The Greene County Rams split games in Heart of Iowa basketball in Alleman Friday, dropping the girls game to the North Polk Comets 58-12 and winning the boys game 47-43. The girls are now 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the HOIAC, while the boys are 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
The girls played without leading scorer Laurin Lyons, who was sidelined on concussion precautions after a hard fall in the Tuesday night game. Samantha Hardaway and Hannah Promes scored four points each and Taylor Wessling and Ashley Millard scored two points each. The Rams made six of 48 shots from the floor for 12.5 percent shooting. They missed all four free throw attempts and unofficially they committed 26 turnovers. Onica Delp led in rebounds with five and Millard had four.
The boys battled through a low scoring game after the Comets took a six point lead at the start. The Rams didn’t score in the first three minutes of play. They led 13-11 after one quarter. The Comets were up 19-17 with 5:18 to play in the second quarter. The score was tied at 22 with 3:08 to play in the quarter, but from then on, the Rams held the lead.
Baskets were hard to come by in the third quarter. Trey Tucker scored eight of his 19 points in that quarter, but those were the only Ram points. The Comets mustered just seven points. The Rams held an 11 point lead midway in the fourth quarter, 42-31, but the win wasn’t solid until there was less than a minute to play after a Comet 3-pointer brought the score to 46-38 with 1:35 in the game.
Trey Hinote scored 18 points, Tommy Jacobsen and Wade Adcock scored four each, and Lance Hughes scored two points. Hinote shot at 47.6 percent from the floor while Tucker shot at 47.3 percent.
The Rams’ shooting was cooler than in the two previous games. They made 18 of 43 shots from 2-point range and five of 15 shots from 3-point range for 39.6 percent from the floor. They made six of 11 free throws for 55 percent.
Jacobsen had 10 rebounds and Adcock had nine. All of Adcock’s were defensive rebounds. Tucker had six steals and Jacobsen had four. The foul scene was different than in the high scoring game against C-M/B, when no one was tagged with more than two fouls. No Rams fouled out against North Polk, but Hinote, Calvin Skalla and Adcock were all tagged with four fouls. The team was whistled for a total of 19 fouls.
The Rams will host a Mega Night Tuesday at the middle school and Greene County Community Center. Both varsity games will be played at the middle school, with the girls tip-off at 6 pm and the boys playing at 7:30.
